The New York Feds General Business Conditions index, otherwise known as the Empire State index, has gone back into negative territory. The headline general business conditions index fell seven points to 4.6. Labour market indicators pointed to a slight increase in both employment and the average workweek.

Major U.S. stock indexes ended sharply higher on Monday as investors were optimistic about the start of earnings season, while transportation and smallcap shares also jumped.
