MADRID, Feb 27 Reuters The head of Spain39;s market supervisor said it is examining recent information submitted by drugmaker Grifols in the wake of allegations of false accounting made by Gotham City Research, while also analysing the actions of the shortseller.
Gotham City39;s report wiped several billion euros off the market value of Grifols, which it said manipulated its reported debt and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation EBITDA to underreport its leverage ratio.
Grifols has repeatedly denied the allegations and said it stood by its published leverage ratio.
We sent a request for information to Grifols in January, we had to ask for some additional information to the first batch of information sent to us by the company, CNMV chief Rodrigo Buenaventura said, adding that the Spanish market supervisor had received the additional documents a few days ago.
We still need a few more weeks to complete our analysis, Buenaventura said at an event on Tuesday to present the CNMV39;s 2024 activities plan.
The CNMV previously said it was also looking into whether Gotham had complied with European regulations on market abuse.
Asked on Tuesday what possible consequences Gotham could face if it was found to be in breach of market regulations, Buenaventura said they were difficult to anticipate.
